The global motorsport landscape is celebrating a historic geographic breakthrough. Formula 1 leadership, alongside Rwandan President Paul Kagame and FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, formally confirmed that Rwanda has secured a decade-long partnership to bring the world championship back to African soil. The announcement closes out years of widespread speculation and planning regarding the sport's return to a continent that has been missing from the calendar for over thirty years.
The centerpiece of the ambitious project will be a state-of-the-art, purpose-built permanent racing circuit located in Bugesera, roughly 40 kilometers south of the capital city, Kigali. Engineered to meet the rigorous FIA Grade 1 technical and safety standards required to host elite Formula 1 machinery, the circuit will be constructed alongside major regional infrastructure upgrades near the Bugesera International Airport. The project is spearheaded by the Rwanda Development Board as a core driver of economic growth, high-end tourism, and international brand positioning.
Rwandan President Paul Kagame championed the milestone during the official launch, emphasizing its cultural and continental significance. Having initially unveiled the nation's serious intent during prior high-level sports gatherings, Kagame noted that the multi-year deal changes how Africa is represented and perceived on the global sporting stage. F1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali echoed these sentiments, praising the clear vision and long-term commitment demonstrated by the Rwandan leadership to ensure a sustainable and impactful partnership.
The announcement has also been widely welcomed across the international paddock, fulfilling a long-standing objective for figures like seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who has continuously advocated for the championship to race in Africa. As planning transitions into track design and construction phases over the coming years, the early 2030s horizon promises to introduce an electrifying new chapter for Formula 1.
