Qatari table tennis team wins six medals as West Asian Championship ends

Amman: The Qatari table tennis delegation achieved remarkable success at the West Asian Table Tennis Championship, held in Amman, Jordan, concluding with a total of six medals. The championship is set to finish on August 31.

The delegation secured two gold medals, three silver medals, and one bronze medal.

The under-17 team, featuring Sultan Khalid Al Kuwari, Abbad Al Abdullah, Ahmed Eid Qarni, and Rawad Al Nasser, claimed the gold medal by defeating the Bahraini team with a score of 3-0 in the final match. Similarly, the under-15 youth team, comprising Mohammed Al Sulaiti, Abdulaziz Al Abdullah, and Youssef Abdul-Dhaher, also earned a gold medal after overcoming the Saudi team 3-1 in their final.

The under-13 team, which included Issa Al Haddad, Abdulaziz Al Abdullah, and Rabia Al Kuwari, secured a silver medal after a narrow defeat to the Syrian team, finishing 2-3 in the final. Additionally, the junior team (under 11 years old) consisting of Rabia Al Kuwari and Mubarak Marzouq Al Mansouri, also earned a silver medal after losing to the Syrian team with a score of 2-3. Another junior team (under 11 years old), made up of Dana Al Kaabi and Serene Sheikh, similarly finished with a silver medal after their final match against Syria, ending in a 2-3 loss.

In the senior category, the women’s team achieved third place, earning a bronze medal, which contributed to the total of six medals and showcased the exceptional performance of the Qatari delegation throughout the team competitions.

In light of these outcomes, Qatar Table Tennis Federation (QTTF) President Khalil bin Ahmed Al Mohannadi, commended the performance levels exhibited by the Qatari teams throughout the tournament, as well as the array of medals secured. He remarked that the results were not unexpected, attributing them to the thorough preparation undertaken prior to the tournament, which included successful training camps both domestically and internationally.

Abbad Nasser Al Abdullah, a member of the U-17 national team, emphasized that securing the gold medal in the team event is a significant honor. He views this achievement as a strong incentive to pursue further success in both team and doubles competitions.

Similarly, Rabia Khaled Al Kuwari, a player on the junior team, conveyed his immense joy at reaching the podium and elevating Qatar’s status. He highlighted that this accomplishment is a remarkable feat, made possible through diligent preparation before traveling to Jordan for the tournament. He also acknowledged the contributions of his teammates, as well as the technical, administrative, and medical staff, noting that their collective effort was crucial to their success.

It is important to mention that the doubles and singles competitions commenced immediately following the conclusion of the team events, and the Qatari delegation is optimistic about securing additional medals in the forthcoming competitions.
