Late own goal and penalty earn Villa first-leg win at Brugge

Aston Villa are poised to advance to the Champions League quarter-finals after a 3-1 victory over Club Brugge in Belgium. This last-16 first-leg match marked Villa’s first appearance in the knockout stages of Europe’s premier competition since the 1982-83 quarter-finals.

Leon Bailey provided a lightning start for the Premier League club, scoring a half-volley just two minutes and 15 seconds into the game. The former Genk player capitalized on a headed assist from Tyrone Mings, marking a moment of redemption for the England defender, who had previously conceded a penalty against Brugge in the group stage.

However, Villa’s lead was short-lived. Maxim De Cuyper equalized for the hosts in the 12th minute with a low finish, shortly after Marcus Rashford was denied by former Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet. The match remained tightly contested, with Brugge captain Hans Vanaken narrowly missing a header in the 69th minute, and Christos Tzolis wasting a significant opportunity by shooting over from eight yards.

Villa regained control in the final minutes. In the 82nd minute, Brandon Mechele inadvertently scored an own goal while attempting to intercept a cross from Morgan Rogers. Six minutes later, substitute Marco Asensio converted a penalty after Matty Cash was fouled, securing a two-goal advantage for Villa.

The return leg is scheduled at Villa Park on Wednesday, 12 March, at 20:00 GMT.
