In one of the most blistering attacks on sports governance in recent history, LaLiga President Javier Tebas has publicly branded FIFA a “sick system” and called for the immediate resignation of its President, Gianni Infantino. Speaking in an explosive interview with Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, the outspoken head of Spanish football accused the sport’s supreme governing body of destroying the broader football industry by relentlessly expanding international competitions at the direct expense of domestic leagues, player safety, and financial sustainability. Tebas argued that while a World Cup lasts just 40 days for a select group of elite players, domestic leagues sustain the entire ecosystem year-round, generating tens of thousands of local jobs that are now endangered by commercial overreach.
Tebas expressed outrage over FIFA’s rumored plans to further expand future World Cup formats from 48 to 64 teams, asserting that saturating the global calendar makes no economic or athletic sense. He also took aim at the commercialization of match fixtures during the recent tournament in North America, pointing out 27-minute extended halftime breaks engineered for televised entertainment and mandatory “hydration breaks” held inside climate-controlled, air-conditioned venues like Dallas, Los Angeles, and Atlanta. Tebas labeled these breaks an obvious pretense for additional commercial advertising slots rather than genuine player welfare measures.
Adding fuel to the fire, Tebas highlighted what he termed “absolute gravity” regarding FIFA’s disciplinary integrity, specifically pointing to the controversial suspension of U.S. striker Folarin Balogun’s red card ban during the World Cup following direct political intervention from Donald Trump. According to Tebas, FIFA only avoided an unprecedented governance crisis because Belgium subsequently eliminated the United States in the knockout rounds, allowing officials to quietly bury the incident.
Tebas was joined in his condemnation by former FIFA chief Sepp Blatter, who similarly urged fans and national federations to reclaim football from Infantino’s administration. Despite widespread discontent among European club executives behind closed doors, Tebas conceded that Infantino remains virtually untouchable ahead of FIFA’s March 2027 presidential elections due to systemic complicity and a lack of opposition candidates willing to run against the established regime.
