Enzo Fernandez found the net as Chelsea secured a crucial victory over Tottenham, climbing into the Premier League’s top four and strengthening their bid for Champions League qualification next season.
The defeat heaps further pressure on Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou, whose team remains in 14th place and on course for their lowest league finish since 2008.
Chelsea, energized by the returns of Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson from injury, controlled the game at Stamford Bridge but were left frustrated at halftime after failing to convert several chances.
Their persistence paid off early in the second half when Fernandez rose highest to nod in Palmer’s pinpoint cross in the 50th minute.
Moises Caicedo appeared to double the lead with a stunning volley, but after a four-minute VAR review, the goal was disallowed for a marginal offside in the buildup.
Tottenham thought they had equalized when substitute Pape Matar Sarr rifled in from distance, but VAR intervened again. After reviewing the pitchside monitor, referee Craig Pawson ruled the goal out due to Sarr catching Caicedo with his studs before shooting.
The result propels Chelsea into fourth place, pushing reigning champions Manchester City down to fifth and Newcastle to sixth.
Maresca’s Men Gearing Up for a Strong Finish
Returning from the international break, Chelsea looked sharp from the outset.
They almost broke the deadlock in the opening minute when Jackson struck the post following an awkward deflection off Micky van de Ven. Moments later, Malo Gusto had Stamford Bridge briefly celebrating before his fierce shot found the side-netting rather than the back of the goal.
Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario pulled off a superb fingertip save to deny Jadon Sancho, while Jackson’s relentless runs kept Van de Ven and Cristian Romero under constant pressure.
It was that same defensive duo who failed to track Fernandez, allowing the Argentine midfielder to ghost between them and head home Palmer’s delivery.
With key players returning and momentum building, Enzo Maresca’s side is well-positioned for a strong finish. A top-four spot is within reach, and with the Europa Conference League still in play, silverware remains a real possibility.
