Newcastle: Newcastle United strengthened their push for a Champions League spot with a crushing 4-1 win over Manchester United at St James’ Park, in the absence of unwell manager Eddie Howe.
Assistant coaches Jason Tindall and Graeme Jones took charge and the players responded with a fine performance, recording a first league double over their opponents since the 1930-31 campaign.
Manchester United goalkeeper Altay Bayındır was guilty of a serious error, clipping a pass straight to Joelinton, who headed the ball to Bruno Guimaraes, making it 4-1 in the 77th minute.
Newcastle dominated the match from start to finish, opening the scoring when Alexander Isak’s lobbed pass found Sandro Tonali, who scored.
Harvey Barnes sealed the win with two second-half goals, tapping home Jacob Murphy’s pass and producing a ruthless finish after a slip by Noussair Mazraoui.
The win moved Newcastle up to fourth spot, just a point behind third-placed Nottingham Forest.
Manchester United, meanwhile, dropped to 14th in the table, three points off fourth-bottom West Ham, after a 10th defeat in 21 Premier League games under Ruben Amorim.
