Martinelli and Saka on target as Arsenal see off Olympiacos

Gabriel Martinelli’s early strike set Arsenal on their way to a 2-0 victory over Olympiacos, keeping their 100% record intact in the Champions League league phase.

The Brazilian forward, who scored and assisted in the Gunners’ opening win against Athletic Club, was once again decisive.

After Viktor Gyökeres powered through the Olympiacos defence, his effort rebounded off the post and Martinelli reacted quickest to tap in after just 12 minutes.

Olympiacos threatened an equaliser before the break, with Daniel Podence forcing David Raya into a superb save from a volley, while Francisco Chiquinho saw a finish ruled out for offside.

Arsenal, who made six changes following Sunday’s dramatic Premier League win over Newcastle, looked to extend their lead through Martin Ødegaard, only for Konstantinos Tzolakis to stand firm.

Substitute Bukayo Saka eventually settled the contest in stoppage time, squeezing a shot through Tzolakis’ legs to seal the three points.

Mikel Arteta, boosted by a £250m summer recruitment drive, was able to rotate his squad and rest key figures such as Declan Rice and Saka for much of the match, a luxury that underlined Arsenal’s growing depth as they navigate a demanding campaign.
