Mason Mount and Sesko strike as Amorim marks 50th game with much-needed Manchester United win

Under-pressure Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim celebrated his 50th game in charge with a vital 2-0 victory over Sunderland at Old Trafford.

Mason Mount opened the scoring after just eight minutes, firing home confidently for his first goal of the season — United’s earliest Premier League strike since Marcus Rashford’s effort at Ipswich in Amorim’s debut match last November.

Benjamin Sesko added a second before the break, finishing from close range for his second goal in as many games, while United’s first clean sheet of the campaign capped a strong performance from debutant goalkeeper Senne Lammens, a summer signing from Club Brugge for £18.1m.

Sunderland thought they had a lifeline when awarded a penalty just before half-time, but the decision was overturned by VAR after replays showed Sesko’s high boot did not make contact with Trai Hume.

The win brought welcome relief for Amorim, whose side secured a third consecutive home victory for the first time in more than two years.

It also marked another milestone, as the Portuguese coach became the first United manager since Sir Alex Ferguson to win his 50th game in charge.

Old Trafford echoed with chants of “Ruben Amorim” at the final whistle — a moment of respite and recognition for a manager still fighting to turn United’s fortunes around.
