Mercedes have confirmed that George Russell and Kimi Antonelli will continue as their Formula 1 driver line-up for the 2026 season.
The announcement, made ahead of the United States Grand Prix weekend and just 10 days after Russell’s commanding victory in Singapore, ends weeks of speculation about the team’s plans for the sport’s upcoming regulation overhaul.
Team principal Toto Wolff said:
“Confirming our driver line-up was always a matter of when, not if. We wanted to take our time, handle the negotiations properly, and make sure everyone was happy. George and Kimi have proved a strong pairing and we’re excited to continue our journey together. Our focus now is on finishing this season strongly and preparing for 2026’s new era.”
Mercedes’ decision became inevitable once Max Verstappen confirmed during the summer that he would remain with Red Bull, though Wolff has made no secret of his continued interest in the four-time world champion for future seasons.
Russell’s contract discussions took longer than expected, as both sides worked to finalise mutually satisfactory terms. The Briton, who has won twice this year and is currently fourth in the drivers’ standings, said:
“I’m really proud to be continuing our journey together. Next year will mark a decade since I first signed with Mercedes. It’s been such a successful partnership so far, and I’m excited for what’s ahead, especially with the 2026 regulation changes. This has been my strongest F1 season yet, and I want to keep building from here.”
The team did not reveal the length of Russell’s new deal, stating only that both drivers will continue “into 2026.”
Antonelli, who stepped up to replace Lewis Hamilton following his move to Ferrari, will embark on his second F1 season.
The 19-year-old Italian has shown flashes of brilliance — taking pole for the Miami sprint and scoring his first podium in Canada — but has also endured a mixed debut campaign.
After a difficult run of races in Europe, Wolff described Antonelli’s performance at Monza as “underwhelming,” but the youngster has since responded with improved finishes in Baku and Singapore.
Antonelli said:
“I’m super excited to be continuing with the team. I’ve learned so much in my first season — from the highs to the challenging moments. They’ve all made me stronger as a driver and a teammate. I’m really grateful to Toto and everyone at Brackley and Brixworth for their trust and support.”
Mercedes are currently battling for second place in the Constructors’ Championship as Formula 1 prepares for its biggest technical reset in 2026, with sweeping changes to both chassis and engine regulations.
