QBF unveils new Basketball League Championship Shield

Doha: The Qatar Basketball Federation (QBF) on Thursday unveiled the new design of the Basketball League Championship Shield for the 2025–2026 season during a press conference at its headquarters in Al Gharafa.

The Federation also presented the redesigned gold, silver and bronze medals as part of a broader development strategy aimed at enhancing the league’s visual identity and elevating its competitive stature, in line with the continued technical and organisational growth of basketball in Qatar.

The event was attended by QBF Secretary-General and Director of National Teams Saadoun Sabah Al-Kuwari, Assistant Secretary-General and Competitions Committee Chairman Ahmed Yousef Al-Darwish, and Technical Secretary Essam Lotfi, alongside representatives of the nine participating clubs — Al Rayyan, Al Arabi, Al Sadd, Al Ahli, Al Shamal, Al Wakrah, Al Gharafa, Qatar Club and Al Khor.

The Basketball League continues to attract strong participation and intense competition, with its rich history reflecting long-standing rivalries and a diverse list of champions over the decades.

Attention is now focused on the semi-final “playoff” stage of the მიმდინარე season, where Al Rayyan take on Al Ahli, while Al Arabi face Al Sadd, with teams closely matched and the title race wide open.

Speaking on the occasion, Al-Kuwari said the launch of the new shield forms part of a comprehensive plan to develop domestic competitions. “We are committed to continuously advancing our tournaments in line with global developments in the sport. The introduction of a new championship shield reflects our efforts to enhance the league’s value, strengthen competitiveness among clubs, and support player development for national teams,” he said.

Al-Darwish noted that the new design was adopted following a detailed study aimed at presenting a modern identity for the championship. “The new shield balances the league’s rich history with a contemporary design suited to the current phase. In addition, this season’s competition format has been structured to ensure maximum fairness and competitiveness through to the final stages,” he added.

The current edition marks the 45th season of the championship since its inception in 1981–1982, when Al Arabi claimed the inaugural title.

Al Rayyan remain the most successful club in the competition’s history with 18 titles, followed by Al Arabi (10) and Qatar Club (7). Al Sadd, Al Gharafa, Al Shamal and former side Al Jaish have each won two titles, while Al Ahli secured their only championship during the 2000–2001 season.
