France reclaim top spot in latest FIFA/Coca-Cola Men’s World Ranking

Zurich: France have surged back to the summit of the FIFA/Coca-Cola Men’s World Ranking for the first time since September 2018, following the first-ever real-time updates during national team matches.

The latest ranking, released on Wednesday, reflects significant shifts after 166 men’s internationals were played since the previous update. The changes were shaped largely by intense matches in the final push for qualification to the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Les Bleus now sit in first position, climbing two places after securing two wins in their recent friendlies. They have leapfrogged Spain, who drop to second, and reigning world champions Argentina, who slide to third. The gap between the top three sides remains extremely tight.

France’s bid to hold onto the number one ranking they occupied since September 2025 was briefly tested by a draw against Egypt (up two to 29th) on March 31.

Other notable movements in the top 10 saw Portugal rise one place to fifth, swapping positions with Brazil, who fall to sixth. The remainder of the top 10 remains unchanged.

In the top 50, the biggest climbers include Türkiye (up three to 22nd), Côte d’Ivoire (up three to 34th), Sweden (up four to 38th) and Tunisia (up three to 44th). Bosnia and Herzegovina enjoyed a strong rise, climbing six places to 65th, boosted by their successful qualification for the World Cup alongside fellow European play-off winners Sweden, Türkiye and Czechia (up two to 41st).

Further down the standings, Vietnam made the largest jump overall, rising nine places to 99th. Nepal and Bhutan both climbed six places to 176th and 186th respectively. Eritrea marked a notable return, re-entering the ranking for the first time in nearly three years at 184th.

With World Cup 2026 qualification now concluded, only three teams from the current top 30 will miss the expanded 48-team tournament: Italy (up one to 12th), Denmark (up one to 20th) and Nigeria (unchanged at 26th). Impressively, 37 of the 48 qualified nations currently feature in the top 50.

Kosovo reached a new highest-ever position at 78th (up one), despite narrowly missing out on World Cup qualification after their play-off defeat to Türkiye.

The full FIFA/Coca-Cola Men’s World Ranking is available on the official Inside FIFA website. The next official update is scheduled for June 10, 2026.
