Qatar 3×3 basketball team departs for FIBA Asia Cup in Singapore

Doha: The Qatar 3×3 national basketball team left Doha yesterday for Singapore to compete in the FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup 2026, one of Asia’s premier fast-paced basketball competitions.

The delegation departed on April 1, 2026, as the tournament gets underway at the Kallang venue in the city-state, running until April 5. Qatar’s participation forms part of the team’s technical preparations for the event, which has seen growing popularity and competitiveness across the continent.

The men’s squad will feature in the main draw, beginning its campaign in Pool D on April 3. Qatar will open against the winner of the preliminary rounds (India) before facing a tough challenge against New Zealand later the same day. New Zealand is regarded as one of the stronger sides in the group, offering an early test of Qatar’s progress in the 3×3 format.

The Qatari delegation is led by Saadoun Sabah Al-Kuwari, Secretary General of the Qatar Basketball Federation and Director of National Teams, accompanied by Captain Yaseen Ismail, Director of the 3×3 National Teams. The technical staff is headed by Coach Marco, who will guide the team in their bid to deliver a competitive performance and uphold Qatar’s ambitions on the continental stage.

Qatar’s men’s roster comprises four players: Mohammed Hashem Zidan, Mubarak Jama, Dejan Janic and Nedim Muslic. The coaching team is optimistic that this quartet can reflect the steady advancement of Qatari basketball in the 3×3 discipline against diverse playing styles from across Asia.

The tournament features 22 men’s national teams, including powerhouses such as Mongolia, China, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines, South Korea and hosts Singapore. Arab representation is also strong, with Saudi Arabia and Bahrain adding to the regional flavour and highlighting the rising interest in 3×3 basketball in the Gulf and broader Middle East.

This edition of the FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup underscores the continued expansion of the sport, which emphasises speed, skill and teamwork in a compact, high-intensity format. Qatar’s involvement reflects the country’s broader commitment to developing basketball at all levels and gaining valuable experience against top Asian opposition.

The team will look to make a strong impression as they compete for honours in Singapore, building on their preparations and contributing to the growing profile of Qatari sport on the international stage.
