Burnley 0-2 Brighton: Mats Wieffer brace seals dominant win as Clarets edge closer to relegation

By Ajileye Temi Kings

Burnley’s Premier League survival hopes took another major hit after a disciplined and clinical Brighton side secured a comfortable 2-0 victory at Turf Moor, with Mats Wieffer scoring twice to decide the contest.

From the opening whistle, Brighton looked sharper, more composed, and far more dangerous in possession. Burnley, already under pressure in the relegation zone, struggled to cope with Brighton’s movement and intensity in midfield.

The breakthrough came in the first half when Mats Wieffer arrived at the right time inside the box to finish off a well-worked move, giving the visitors a deserved lead. Burnley attempted to respond through set pieces and long balls into the final third, but Brighton’s defensive structure remained solid.

Despite brief spells of pressure from the home side, Burnley lacked cutting edge in the final third. Brighton, meanwhile, continued to control the tempo of the game, patiently waiting for openings while maintaining defensive discipline.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Burnley pushing forward more in desperation but leaving gaps at the back. Brighton exploited those spaces and once again found their reward through Mats Wieffer, who doubled his tally with a composed finish to make it 2-0 and effectively end the contest.

After the second goal, Brighton managed the game professionally, slowing the tempo and denying Burnley any real route back into the match. The Clarets tried to rally late on, but their efforts lacked quality in the final pass and finishing.

The result highlights the growing gap between both sides this season—Brighton pushing for European qualification with controlled performances, while Burnley continue to struggle for consistency and goals as relegation looms closer.

For Brighton, it was another statement win built on structure, patience, and clinical finishing. For Burnley, it was another frustrating afternoon where effort was not matched by end product.
