Qatar to field 34 athletes at Asian Beach Games Sanya 2026

Doha: The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) has announced that it will participate with a delegation of 34 male and female athletes at the Asian Beach Games Sanya 2026, scheduled to take place in Sanya from April 22 to 30.

The event will feature 1,790 athletes competing across 14 sports. Speaking at a press conference held at the QOC headquarters on Sunday, Deputy Head of the Qatari Administrative Delegation, Abdulla Al Abdulla, confirmed that Qatar will compete in seven disciplines: beach volleyball (men and women), basketball (men and women), beach handball, sailing, aquathlon, jiu-jitsu and wrestling.

Al Abdulla said the participation reflects the QOC’s commitment to maintaining an active presence at continental events and strengthening Qatar’s sporting profile on the Asian stage.

He noted that preparations have been completed through comprehensive training programmes overseen by the respective federations in coordination with the QOC. The delegation is targeting strong performances and podium finishes, particularly in beach handball and beach volleyball, alongside individual events.

Al Abdulla added that the Games are expected to witness a high technical level, given the presence of elite athletes from across the continent. He stressed that participation is not limited to results, but also aims to maximise technical gains by exposing athletes to diverse competition environments and enhancing their readiness for upcoming events.

Reviewing Qatar’s history at the Games, he said the country first competed in Asian Beach Games Bali 2008, followed by Asian Beach Games Muscat 2010 and Asian Beach Games Haiyang 2012, where Qatar secured its first gold medal through the handball team. The team later claimed 12 medals at Asian Beach Games Phuket 2014 and seven medals at Asian Beach Games Da Nang 2016.

Meanwhile, Head of Team Qatar Media Delegation, Mohammed Al-Zaidan, announced the launch of a promotional campaign accompanying the participation, aimed at supporting athletes and enhancing their media presence throughout the Games.

He said the campaign, under the slogan “From the Shores of Doha to the Shores of Sanya,” will highlight Qatar’s coastal destinations, including Katara Beach, Old Doha Port, Lusail Marina, Doha Corniche, The Pearl Island and 974 Beach, linking sport with tourism promotion.

Al-Zaidan added that the campaign will deliver a range of digital content capturing the atmosphere of the competitions and enhancing audience engagement, as part of an integrated media strategy to showcase Qatari sport at both continental and international levels.

The Games will include competitions in 3×3 basketball, aquatics, aquathlon, athletics, handball, kabaddi, football, volleyball, wrestling, rowing, jiu-jitsu, sailing, sport climbing and teqball.
