Qatar completes all preparations for 4th GCC Games – Doha 2026

Doha: The Organising Committee of the 4th GCC Games – Doha 2026 has announced the successful completion of all preparations for the prestigious regional multi-sport event, set to take place from May 11 to 22.

Speaking at a press conference held at Al Wajba Hall, headquarters of the Qatar Olympic Committee, Sheikh Abdullah bin Saud Al Thani, Head of the Marketing and Communications Committee, affirmed that Qatar’s hosting of the Games is a natural continuation of the strong sports cooperation among GCC countries. It reflects the deep fraternal ties, shared values, and unity that bind the peoples of the Gulf.

“This edition of the Games serves as an important platform to strengthen ties among the youth of the GCC countries and to promote noble sporting values,” Sheikh Abdullah said. “It supports the continued development of joint Gulf sports cooperation and reinforces the role of sport as a bridge for communication and connection among nations.”

He highlighted that the Marketing and Communications Committee has crafted a comprehensive identity for the Games, inspired by the region’s rich culture and heritage. This identity mirrors shared Gulf values while aligning with the expectations of diverse sports audiences, aiming to deliver a distinctive organisational and marketing experience.

A number of official sponsors and strategic partners have been secured, forming a vital pillar in enhancing public engagement and elevating the event’s overall value. Sheikh Abdullah also unveiled the official mascot, “Washeq,” designed as an interactive symbol that captures the spirit of the Games and boosts engagement, especially among young people.

The public is invited to attend the official opening ceremony on May 11 at Al Shaqab, which promises to provide a spectacular launch befitting the high level of preparations. Sheikh Abdullah emphasised that the marketing campaign will continue across all stages to ensure strong attendance and deliver a memorable edition that honours the stature of the GCC countries and the aspirations of their peoples.

The Mascot: A symbol of Gulf identity

Maryam Al Mansoori, Head of Marketing and Sponsorship at the Organising Committee, explained that “Washeq,” inspired by the desert caracal — a prominent symbol of the Arabian Peninsula’s natural environment — embodies the core values of the Games, including fair competition, discipline, and the spirit of Gulf participation. It aligns perfectly with the slogan “One Gulf, One Heart.”

“Washeq is closely linked to Gulf identity, representing an integral part of the region’s wildlife heritage historically found across its vast deserts, valleys, and diverse landscapes,” Al Mansoori stated. This choice underscores the deep cultural and natural connections among GCC nations and reinforces a shared vision for the future.

She added that the mascot symbolises agility, precision, and adaptability, qualities drawn from the resilient desert environment. Its composed and calm demeanour reflects the professionalism and balance the Games seek to promote. As a central element of the visual identity, “Washeq” will feature prominently across media platforms, official activities, and on-ground activations, fostering strong emotional connections with audiences throughout the region.

Qatar delegation fully prepared

Najla Al Khayareen, Head of the Qatari Administrative Delegation, confirmed that Team Qatar has achieved the highest level of readiness. All administrative, organisational, accommodation, transport, and logistical arrangements have been finalised, allowing athletes to focus entirely on their performances.

Qatar will compete in 19 sports with a carefully selected group of athletes tasked with representing the nation honourably. Al Khayareen urged supporters to rally behind the team, noting that fan encouragement will play a crucial role in achieving strong results. She wished the athletes every success in showcasing the Gulf spirit on home soil.

Official sponsors and venues

The Organising Committee announced its official sponsors and strategic partners: Hamad International Airport, Msheireb Properties, Al Kass Channel, Suhail Industrial Holding Group, Kotinos, Bornan, Al Rayyan Water, Dynamic Sports, Al Jazeera Perfumes, and The Look Company. These collaborations will significantly support delivery and boost public engagement.

The Games will feature competitions in 19 disciplines, including handball, table tennis, athletics, squash, padel, fencing, boxing, taekwondo, karate, swimming, billiards, snooker, basketball (5×5 and 3×3), shooting, archery, volleyball, equestrian, and bowling. Events will be hosted across 11 world-class venues such as Aspire Dome, Hamad Aquatic Centre, Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex, Lusail Shooting Range, and Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club.

Historical context

The inaugural GCC Games were held in Manama in 2011, where Qatar secured third place with 20 medals. The second edition in Dammam (2015) saw Qatar again finish third with 59 medals, while the third in Kuwait (2022) resulted in a fifth-place finish with 52 medals. Doha 2026 promises to build on this legacy, further strengthening Gulf sporting bonds.

With less than two weeks until the opening, excitement is building across the region for what organisers describe as a landmark celebration of unity, youth, and sporting excellence.
