World Cup 2026: Erling Haaland brace powers Norway past gritty Iraq in 4-1 Group I opener

By Temi Kings

FOXBOROUGH, MA. Do not let the final scoreline fool you. While a 4-1 scoreline looks like an absolute blowout on paper, Norway’s Group I opening victory against a resilient Iraq side at Boston Stadium (Gillette Stadium) was a masterclass in capitalising on critical moments rather than total ninety-minute dominance.

Both nations stepped onto the pitch carrying the weight of decades-long absences from football’s biggest stage. In the end, it was a generational talent making his World Cup debut who stole the headlines. Manchester City’s Erling Haaland marked his arrival with a ruthless first-half brace, drawing him level with legendary figures like Robert Lewandowski in World Cup goals in just a fraction of the time.

First half: tactical patience vs. moment of magic

The match began with high tactical discipline. Iraq manager Jesús Casas deployed a compact, structured 4-4-2 block looking to limit space between the lines, while Norway attempted to dominate possession from the back.

Norway’s opening goal in the 29th minute was a textbook example of team chemistry. A patient sequence beginning with goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland travelled through 14 consecutive passes across the pitch before David Møller Wolfe delivered a perfectly weighted cross from the left wing. Haaland split his markers, sliding in dynamically at the back post to poke the ball home.

Iraq fires back into history

Instead of crumbling under the pressure, the Lions of Mesopotamia pushed forward with absolute fearlessness. In the 39th minute, midfielder Amir Al-Ammari found a pocket of space and floated a beautifully chipped cross into the heart of the 18-yard box. Iraq’s talismanic forward Aymen Hussein read the flight perfectly, leaping above Kristoffer Ajer to plant an unstoppable header past Nyland. The stadium erupted as Hussein became only the second player in Iraqi history to score a goal at a World Cup finals.

The costly blunder

With halftime rapidly approaching and momentum swinging heavily toward Iraq, tragedy struck the Asian side. In the 43rd minute, an unforced communication breakdown between young center-back Zaid Tahseen and veteran goalkeeper Jalal Hassan left a loose ball bobbling in no man’s land. Haaland, sensing blood, pounced on the error in a flash, stealing possession and rolling it into an empty net to break Iraqi hearts right before the whistle.

Second half: aerial supremacy seals the victory

Coming out of the break, Iraq once again looked like the more fluid, creative side, driving the tempo and probing Norway’s defensive line. Despite controlling large spells of play, Iraq lacked the final clinical touch to beat Nyland a second time.

Recognizing his team was losing control of the midfield, Norway manager Ståle Solbakken made a series of impactful tactical changes in the 72nd minute, introducing Oscar Bobb, Kristian Thorstvedt, and center-back Leo Østigård.

The substitution proved to be an immediate masterstroke. Just three-and-a-half minutes after entering the pitch, Østigård found himself completely unmarked during a Martin Ødegaard corner sequence. Striding aggressively toward the ball, the defender powered a ferocious header past Jalal Hassan to extend Norway’s cushion to 3-1.

Stoppage time salt in the wound

Iraq fought valiantly until the final whistle, but fatigue ultimately took its toll. Deep into stoppage time (90+6′), a long, looping Norwegian free kick was targeted toward Haaland at the near post. The ball deflected off a chaotic cluster of players, including Thorstvedt, unfortunately striking the retreating Aymen Hussein and trickling past the line for an own goal to wrap up a harsh 4-1 scoreline.
