World Cup 2026: 10-Man Paraguay stuns Turkey 1-0 After Galarza lightning strike and Almirón red card drama

By Temi Kings

Santa Clara, California. They call it Garra Guaraní—the legendary, clawing, unbreakable defensive spirit of Paraguayan football. On Saturday afternoon at Levi’s Stadium, a packed house witnessed its definitive modern masterpiece.

In a breathless, emotionally exhausting Group D encounter, Paraguay pulled off one of the gutsiest defensive stands in recent World Cup history, defeating a highly favoured Turkey side 1-0.

An electric, second-minute strike from Matías Galarza provided the early cushion, but the entire complexion of the match shifted on the stroke of halftime when Newcastle United star Miguel Almirón was sent off. Forced to play the entire second half with a numerical disadvantage, Paraguay turned the match into a tactical fortress, utterly frustrating Vincenzo Montella’s men to secure a massive three points.

First Half: Galarza Shock, Almirón Horror

Turkey walked onto the pitch expecting to dictate the tempo with their technical midfield, but their tactical blueprints were ripped up after just 120 seconds.

Paraguay caught the Turkish backline completely asleep from the opening whistle. Brighton dynamic playmaker Julio Enciso picked up a loose ball in the half-space, driving directly at the heart of the defence. Spotting a gap, Enciso delivered a perfectly weighted, defence-splitting pass into the box. Matías Galarza timed his run to perfection, ghosting past Abdülkerim Bardakcı and sliding a clinical, first-time finish into the bottom corner.

Stunned by the early deficit, Turkey immediately monopolised possession, pinning Paraguay deep into their own territory. Arda Güler and Hakan Çalhanoğlu began probing, but Paraguay’s low block, marshalled beautifully by Gustavo Gómez, stood firm.

Then came the flashpoint that threatened to ruin Paraguay’s afternoon.

Deep into first-half stoppage time (45’+3), Miguel Almirón tracked back to break up a Turkish counter-attack. In a moment of pure rush-of-blood recklessness, Almirón lunged in with a high, studs-up challenge on Ferdi Kadıoğlu. The referee did not hesitate, brandishing a straight red card.

Paraguay walked into the halftime tunnel with a 1-0 lead but facing a mountain to climb in the second half.

Halftime Analysis: Paraguay executed the perfect start but handed Turkey a massive lifeline. Down to 10 men, the second 45 minutes will test the absolute limits of La Albirroja’s endurance.

Second half: The great Paraguayan wall

Sensing an opportunity to overwhelm the 10-man South Americans, Montella made an aggressive double substitution at the break, sacrificing defensive stability for width. Turkey emerged in a hyper-aggressive formation, essentially camping all ten outfield players inside the Paraguayan half.

What followed was 45 minutes of pure, agonising theatre.

Turkey threw everything but the kitchen sink at the Paraguayan goal. Arda Güler hit a curling effort in the 64th minute that required a world-class, fingertip save from Carlos Coronel. Ten minutes later, Kenan Yıldız found space inside the six-yard box, but Omar Alderete threw his body on the line with a heroic, goal-saving block.

Paraguay manager Gustavo Alfaro responded by completely parking the bus, subbing off attackers to reinforce a five-man backline. The strategy worked flawlessly. Despite owning over 75% of second-half possession and registering 18 shots, Turkey lacked the clinical creativity to breach the Paraguayan wall.

When the final whistle blew after six agonising minutes of stoppage time, the Paraguayan bench emptied onto the pitch in wild celebration. They had survived.
