Houston, Texas. There is a familiar, comforting inevitability to Lionel Messi at the FIFA World Cup. No matter the year, no matter the mounting pressure of time, the legendary maestro continues to pen footballing scripts that defy reality.
Before a raucous, polarised crowd of 72,000 at NRG Stadium, Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina passed a gruelling tactical exam, grinding down a resilient Austria side 2-0.
The headline, as it so often is, belongs to Lionel Messi. The 38-year-old icon scored in both halves—first breaking a tense deadlock in the 38th minute before delivering a clinical, 95th-minute death blow. Guided by a masterclass assist from defender Facundo Medina, La Albiceleste secured a hard-earned victory, asserting total control over their group and sending a clear statement to the rest of the field.
First half: Medina’s Vision unlocks the Austrian block
Austria, operating under the high-pressure, hyper-disciplined tactical philosophy of Ralf Rangnick, rolled into Houston with a clear blueprint: disrupt Argentina’s midfield rhythm and isolate Messi. Deploying a rugged 4-2-2-2 shape, the Europeans successfully choked out passing lanes early on, forcing Rodrigo De Paul and Alexis Mac Allister into lateral exchanges.
Austria nearly shocked the South American champions in the 14th minute when Michael Gregoritsch intercepted an underweighted pass, forcing Emiliano “Dibu” Martínez into an athletic, diving save to keep the match level.
But as Austria aggressively squeezed the pitch, they left themselves vulnerable to a vertical counter-punch.
The breakthrough arrived in the 38th minute. Lens defender Facundo Medina, overlapping brilliantly down the left flank, intercepted a loose clearance. Showing immense spatial awareness, Medina cut inside and threaded a vintage, slide-rule pass directly through the heart of the Austrian defence. Lionel Messi read the trajectory perfectly, ghosted past centre-back Kevin Danso, and side-footed an elegant, first-time strike into the bottom-right corner past Patrick Pentz.
Match Progress: Argentina 1 - 0 Austria (Halftime)
[38'] ⚽ Argentina Goal — L. Messi (Assist: F. Medina)
The stadium dissolved into a sea of bowing fans, and Argentina comfortably managed the remaining minutes to head into the tunnel with a vital 1-0 cushion.
Second Half: A bruising grudge match and Messi’s final dagger
Rangnick adjusted his ranks at halftime, introducing Marcel Sabitzer to inject creative vigour into the midfield. The shift turned the second 45 minutes into a highly physical, end-to-end battle.
Austria threw everything forward, forcing Argentina into a deeper defensive posture. Cristian Romero and Nicolás Otamendi were heroic in the air, weathering a relentless barrage of crosses. In the 74th minute, Konrad Laimer looked certain to equalise from the edge of the box, but a desperate, lunging block from De Paul deflected the ball wide.
Scaloni’s Take: “We knew Austria wouldn’t give us an inch. They are one of the most physically taxing teams in this tournament,” Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni said post-match. “But we showed the maturity of champions. We suffered when we had to, and when you have Leo up front, you know the game is never out of your hands.”
As the clock ticked deep into five minutes of stoppage time, Austria committed every single outfield player forward, including their centre-backs, in a desperate search for a dramatic equaliser.
It proved to be their undoing.
In the 90+5th minute, Enzo Fernández intercepted an aerial ball and immediately triggered a lightning-fast counter-attack. He launched a booming pass upfield to a completely unmarked Lionel Messi. Racing past the halfway line with no defenders in sight, Messi calmly drifted toward the penalty area, paused to look Pentz in the eyes, and delicately chipped the ball over the rushing goalkeeper.
The ball bounced into the empty net, sealing the 2-0 victory with the literal final kick of the match.

Group Outlook: What this means
With this comprehensive 2-0 triumph, Argentina positions itself comfortably at the summit of the group, putting one foot firmly into the Round of 32 knockout bracket. Their defensive solidity, spearheaded by Medina’s breakout performance and Martínez’s clean sheet, provides massive tactical flexibility moving forward.
Austria, despite leaving Houston empty-handed, showed enough structural discipline and high-pressure efficiency to remain highly dangerous. Ralf Rangnick’s side will view their next group fixture as an absolute must-win, do-or-die scenario to keep their World Cup dreams alive.
