Postecoglou expresses pride after Tottenham sacking despite Europa League triumph

Ange Postecoglou has expressed immense pride in his two-year spell as Tottenham Hotspur manager, following his dismissal by the Premier League club on Friday.

The 59-year-old Australian guided Spurs to their first trophy in 17 years last month, overseeing a memorable Europa League final victory over Manchester United in Bilbao. However, the club opted to part ways with Postecoglou after a disastrous league campaign that saw them finish just one place above the relegation zone—their worst top-flight showing since the 1976-77 season, with 22 defeats.

In a statement released shortly after his departure was confirmed, Postecoglou reflected warmly on his tenure.

“When I reflect on my time as manager of Tottenham Hotspur, my overriding emotion is one of pride,” he said. “The opportunity to lead one of England’s historic football clubs and bring back the glory it deserves will live with me forever. Sharing that journey with those who truly love the club—and seeing what it meant to them—is something I will never forget.”

He described the Europa League triumph as the pinnacle of two years of determination and belief.

“That night in Bilbao was the culmination of hard work, commitment and the belief that we could achieve something many thought impossible,” he said.

Postecoglou had been open about his desire to change the club’s culture and identity, and said he believed the groundwork had been laid for future success.

“We have built foundations that should ensure this club doesn’t wait another 17 years for a trophy,” he said. “I believe strongly in this group of players—they have more to give and more to achieve.”

Addressing the fans, Postecoglou offered a heartfelt message of gratitude.

“I sincerely thank the supporters—the lifeblood of this club,” he said. “Even through difficult moments, I felt their support and it inspired me every day to keep pushing forward.”

He also paid tribute to his coaching staff and players, calling them “a fantastic group of young men who are now legends of this football club.”

“We are forever connected,” he concluded.
