Spain cruise past Georgia to maintain perfect World Cup qualifying start

Spain extended their perfect start to World Cup qualifying with a comfortable victory over Georgia in Elche.

Crystal Palace midfielder Yeremy Pino opened the scoring midway through the first half, pouncing on Robin Le Normand’s headed pass to finish from close range.

Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili then handed Spain a penalty after fouling Ferran Torres, but redeemed himself by saving the Barcelona forward’s spot-kick.

Tottenham defender Pedro Porro struck the post with a curling effort as Spain continued to dominate, before Mikel Oyarzabal sealed the win with a stunning free-kick that beat Mamardashvili at his near post.

The result keeps Luis de la Fuente’s side top of Group E with nine points from three games, maintaining their 100% record as they close in on qualification for the 2026 World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States.

Spain next face Bulgaria, who were thrashed 6-1 at home by second-placed Turkey, on Tuesday at 19:45 BST.
