Arsenal Survive Mansfield Scare to Reach FA Cup Quarter-Finals

Arsenal avoided a major FA Cup upset as they secured a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Mansfield Town at the One Call Stadium in the fifth round of the competition. The Premier League side were pushed all the way by the spirited League One outfit, but goals from Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze ensured that Mikel Arteta’s team progressed to the quarterfinals. Mansfield, however, produced a determined performance and briefly threatened to cause one of the biggest shocks of the round.

With a busy schedule ahead and key fixtures in multiple competitions, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta opted to rotate his squad heavily for the cup tie. The Gunners started with several young players and fringe squad members, including teenage prospects Max Dowman and Marli Salmon, while experienced figures such as Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze began the match on the bench.

Arsenal lined up with Kepa Arrizabalaga in goal, protected by a defense that included Riccardo Calafiori, Cristhian Mosquera, and Salmon. In midfield and attack, the visitors relied on players like Kai Havertz, Gabriel Martinelli, Christian Nørgaard, and Gabriel Jesus to control the game and provide creativity.

Mansfield Town, managed by Nigel Clough, approached the match with confidence and intensity. The home side deployed a 3-5-2 system, hoping to frustrate Arsenal defensively while using the pace and work rate of attackers Rhys Oates and Tyler Roberts to trouble the visitors on the counterattack.

Despite the difference in league status, Mansfield began the game with energy and determination, pressing high and forcing Arsenal to work hard in possession. The home crowd created a lively FA Cup atmosphere, and the Stags showed they were not intimidated by their high-profile opponents.

Arsenal gradually settled into the contest and began to dominate possession. Their technical quality allowed them to control large spells of the first half, eventually finishing the match with 67 percent of the ball compared to Mansfield’s 33 percent.

However, Mansfield’s disciplined defensive structure limited Arsenal’s clear chances for much of the opening period.

The breakthrough finally arrived late in the first half. In the 41st minute, Noni Madueke produced a moment of quality to put Arsenal ahead. Receiving the ball on the edge of the penalty area, the winger cut inside and curled a precise left-footed effort into the net, leaving Mansfield goalkeeper Liam Roberts with no chance.

The goal rewarded Arsenal’s increasing pressure and appeared to give them control of the tie heading into halftime.

Mansfield refused to give up and came out strongly after the break. Their persistence paid off almost immediately when substitute Will Evans equalized in the 50th minute.

The striker capitalized on a defensive lapse from Arsenal’s inexperienced back line, finishing confidently to spark wild celebrations among the home supporters.

For a moment, the FA Cup upset looked possible. Mansfield played with renewed belief, pressing forward and forcing Arsenal to defend more urgently.

Recognizing the growing threat, Arteta turned to his bench for reinforcements. One of those changes proved decisive when Eberechi Eze entered the game and made an immediate impact.

In the 66th minute, Eze restored Arsenal’s lead with a brilliant strike from the edge of the penalty area. The midfielder unleashed a powerful shot that flew past Roberts and into the net, giving the visitors a crucial advantage once again.

The goal highlighted the difference in quality between the two teams and ultimately proved to be the match-winner.

Even after conceding the second goal, Mansfield continued to fight bravely. The hosts pushed forward in search of another equalizer and created a few promising moments in the closing stages.

Arsenal goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga was called into action late in the game, making important saves to protect his team’s lead. Meanwhile, Arsenal attempted to manage the tempo and limit Mansfield’s attacking opportunities.

The home side’s effort and determination earned admiration from fans and pundits alike, but they were ultimately unable to find a second goal.

While Arsenal had more of the ball and created more chances, Mansfield’s resilience ensured that the match remained tense until the final whistle.

The final whistle confirmed a 2–1 victory for Arsenal, sending the Premier League side into the FA Cup quarterfinals.

Although Arsenal advanced, the match served as a reminder of the unpredictability and drama that make the FA Cup special. Mansfield Town delivered a spirited performance and came close to producing a memorable upset.

For Arsenal, the win keeps their cup ambitions alive while allowing Arteta to rotate his squad and give opportunities to young players. However, the narrow margin of victory also showed that even elite teams must remain fully focused when facing determined lower-league opposition.

In the end, moments of quality from Madueke and Eze proved decisive, ensuring that Arsenal avoided a shock exit and continued their pursuit of silverware this season.
