Haaland strikes as Manchester City close gap on Arsenal in thrilling title clash

Manchester: Manchester City delivered a potentially decisive blow in the Premier League title race, defeating Arsenal 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Erling Haaland’s clinical finish proved the difference as Pep Guardiola’s side closed the gap to three points and retained a game in hand.

The result leaves Arsenal, who remain top with 70 points from 33 games, looking increasingly vulnerable in their bid for a first league title in 22 years. City, now on 67 points from 32 matches, have seized the momentum after a difficult period.

Rayan Cherki opened the scoring for City in the 16th minute with a stunning solo effort, dancing through challenges before slotting home. Arsenal responded almost immediately when Kai Havertz charged down Gianluigi Donnarumma’s hesitant clearance to equalise just two minutes later.

The game remained finely balanced until Haaland pounced 25 minutes from time. The Norwegian striker outmuscled Gabriel Magalhães to meet Nico O’Reilly’s cross and swept the ball past David Raya for his 34th goal of the season, restoring City’s lead.

Arsenal were left to rue their misfortune, hitting the woodwork twice in quick succession either side of Haaland’s winner. Martin Ødegaard saw an effort cleared off the line, while Eberechi Eze’s shot cannoned off the inside of the post and rolled agonisingly along the goal-line.

Donnarumma, who had earlier gifted Arsenal their equaliser, produced a vital save to deny Havertz one-on-one. Late drama continued when Gabriel escaped with only a yellow card after an attempted headbutt on Haaland, and Havertz headed over a glorious chance in stoppage time from Leandro Trossard’s cross.

The victory caps a strong response from City following their League Cup final defeat to Arsenal last month. Mikel Arteta’s side have since managed just one win in six games across all competitions, including four straight domestic losses.

Guardiola’s men now face relegation-threatened Burnley on Wednesday, a match that could see them top the table for the first time this calendar year. Arsenal, despite a relatively favourable remaining fixture list, must regroup quickly with five games left and rediscover the form that carried them to the summit.

This pulsating encounter highlighted the fine margins at the top of the Premier League. While Arsenal showed resilience, City’s superior quality in attack and ability to capitalise on key moments proved decisive.

The title race, which has gripped the nation, has taken another fascinating twist. City now hold the initiative, but with both sides still in contention, the final stretch promises to be unforgettable.
