Zurich: FIFA has announced the formation of the Technical Study Group (TSG) for the FIFA World Cup 2026, bringing together a distinguished panel of former players, coaches and football experts tasked with delivering advanced tactical analysis and performance insights throughout the tournament.
The group will operate under the guidance of Arsène Wenger, FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development, and will include renowned football figures such as Jürgen Klinsmann, Gilberto Silva, Tobin Heath and Pablo Zabaleta.
Also named in the panel are Otto Addo, Jayne Ludlow, Michael O’Neill, Jon Dahl Tomasson, Paulo Wanchope and Aron Winter.
The panel will be led operationally by FIFA Senior Football Expert Pascal Zuberbühler and FIFA’s Lead of Football Performance Insights Tom Gardner, supported by analysts, data scientists, engineers and performance specialists working from Miami, Dallas and Manchester.
FIFA said the TSG will deliver the most comprehensive performance analysis and data ever produced at a FIFA World Cup, using the organisation’s Enhanced Football Intelligence service to provide innovative real-time and post-match insights for broadcasters, teams and supporters worldwide.
The advanced system, developed by FIFA’s Football Performance Insights team in collaboration with Wenger, will integrate augmented reality graphics, tactical visuals and detailed statistical analysis aimed at enhancing the viewing experience and deepening understanding of the modern game.
“The Technical Study Group helps identify trends in the game, prepare future generations for football’s development and contribute to making the sport more exciting by highlighting the qualities players will need in the future,” Wenger said.
“With an unprecedented level of high-quality data, the TSG will be able to describe, analyse and interpret what is happening on the pitch in a way that inspires both technical experts and football fans.”
Throughout the tournament, the TSG will analyse all 104 matches either from dedicated tactical viewing positions inside stadiums or from FIFA’s specialised performance suite in Miami. Members will have access to six live video angles and thousands of real-time data points during every game.
The group will also be responsible for selecting winners of the tournament’s individual awards.
FIFA added that, for the first time in FIFA World Cup history, supporters will be able to access live technical insights directly from the TSG through the FIFA Training Centre social media channels and YouTube platform.
Among the notable members, Klinsmann won the FIFA World Cup with West Germany in 1990 before coaching Germany to a third-place finish at the 2006 tournament, while Gilberto Silva was part of Brazil’s 2002 World Cup-winning squad.
Heath lifted two FIFA Women’s World Cup titles with the United States and won Olympic gold medals in Beijing and London, while Zabaleta claimed Olympic gold with Argentina and enjoyed a successful club career with Manchester City.
Former Denmark international Tomasson, who won the UEFA Champions League with AC Milan, and former Netherlands midfielder Winter also bring extensive coaching experience to the panel.
FIFA said the initiative reflects its commitment to combining elite football expertise with advanced technology to improve tactical understanding and fan engagement during the biggest football tournament in the world.
