In a thrilling Group B opener at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium, Qatar and Switzerland played out a hard-fought 1-1 draw on June 13, 2026. While Switzerland dominated large portions of the match, a heroic stoppage-time header from Boualem Khoukhi ensured the Asian champions walked away with a crucial point in their first-ever World Cup match reached through the qualification process.
Switzerland take early lead
The Nati broke the deadlock early in the first half. In the 16th minute, Swiss midfielder Remo Freuler was brought down inside the box by Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada, earning Switzerland a penalty. Breel Embolo stepped up to the spot, coolly converting into the bottom-left corner to put Switzerland ahead 1-0. Notably, this was the first penalty kick converted by Switzerland in a World Cup tournament, excluding shootouts.
Qatar’s resilient response
Despite controlling possession and creating numerous chances, Switzerland was unable to find a second goal to put the game to bed. Qatar’s defense remained disciplined, and goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada kept his side in contention with a string of impressive saves, including a vital stop against Rubén Vargas in the second half.
As the clock ticked into stoppage time, Qatar began to commit more players forward in a final push for an equaliser. Their persistence was rewarded in the 94th minute when Homam El Amin delivered a pinpoint cross into the centre of the box, where Boualem Khoukhi rose above the Swiss defence to head the ball into the bottom-right corner.
Match implications
The 1-1 draw leaves both teams with one point in Group B, joining Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina, who also played to a draw earlier in the tournament. While Switzerland will be left to rue missed opportunities to extend their lead, the result marks a historic and spirited performance for Qatar as they continue their 2026 World Cup journey.
