HOUSTON, TX, On paper, it was supposed to be a regular statement victory to kickstart a tournament run. Roberto Martínez’s deeply talented Portugal squad entered Houston Stadium commanding the spotlight, with all eyes fixated on the legendary Cristiano Ronaldo as he embarked on a historic, record-equalling sixth FIFA World Cup appearance.
Instead, the opening match of Group K served up the first massive reality check of the tournament.
A remarkably resilient Democratic Republic of the Congo side weathered an early storm, absorbing relentless pressure to secure a historic 1-1 draw against the European heavyweights. While a teenage sensation gave Portugal the dream start, it was a dramatic stoppage-time header from Yoane Wissa that rewrote the script and ignited wild celebrations across Kinshasa.
First Half: tactical suffocation meets direct punishment
Portugal wasted zero time imposing their signature style, stamping authority on the pitch with an overwhelming 80% possession rate. Their 4-2-3-1 blueprint dictated the flow of almost every phase, choking out spaces and moving the ball with crisp precision.
The breakthrough arrived in just the 6th minute. Pedro Neto drove hard down the flank and delivered a teasing, targeted cross into the box. 19-year-old Paris Saint-Germain prodigy João Neves timed his run perfectly, hitting a clinical first-time finish past a helpless Lionel Mpasi to give the Seleção an early cushion.
Goal Alert (6′): Portugal 1, DR Congo 0 — João Neves (Assisted by Pedro Neto)
For the next 35 minutes, Portugal passed the Congolese side into exhaustion, racking up 459 completed passes in the first half alone. However, for all of their structural dominance, Martínez’s side lacked the necessary final bite, failing to cleanly work Mpasi in the opposing goal.
Concurrently, DR Congo remained incredibly disciplined within their compact 5-3-2 low block. As the half drew to a close, the Leopards began generating lethal transition moments.
Deep into stoppage time (45+5′), the African side won a crucial corner. The ball was recycled out wide to Arthur Masuaku, who floated a brilliant, looping cross toward the back post. Brentford forward Yoane Wissa out-muscled the Portuguese center-backs to plant an unstoppable close-range header into the top left corner, securing DR Congo’s first-ever goal in a World Cup finals.

Second half: A tale of frustration and stellar defending
Seeking to restore order and quicken their attacking phases, Martínez hooked a struggling Bernardo Silva at the break, introducing Francisco Conceição. Portugal threw men forward, but the absence of defensive anchor Rúben Dias in the starting eleven continued to leave them vulnerable on the counter.
The match nearly swung back into Portugal’s favor in the 51st minute during a lengthy VAR review for a potential penalty, but the original on-field decision stood, fueling the growing frustration on the Portuguese bench.
As the clock wound down, Congolese right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka put on an absolute defensive clinic. Even when Rafael Leão was introduced off the bench to inject explosive pace down the left wing, Wan-Bissaka tracking back repeatedly snuffed out the threat, entirely isolating Cristiano Ronaldo from receiving service in the box.
Martínez made late, desperate adjustments by throwing Gonçalo Ramos into the attack, but Chancel Mbemba and Axel Tuanzebe put their bodies on the line to grind out the historic point until the final whistle.

Post-match reactions
DR Congo forward Yoane Wissa:
“This is a historic moment for our country. To score the first-ever World Cup goal for our modern generation against a team like Portugal is a dream. We knew if we stayed compact, our chance would come, and we took it.”
Portugal head coach Roberto Martínez:
“We had full control of the ball, but control without a clinical edge means nothing at this level. We let our intensity drop right before halftime and paid the ultimate price. We must react quickly.”
Group K outlook
With the spoils shared in Houston, Group K is entirely up for grabs. Portugal will look to convert their heavy possession into three points when they take on Uzbekistan on Tuesday, June 23. Meanwhile, a buoyant DR Congo side heads to Guadalajara to square off against Colombia on June 24, firmly believing a spot in the knockout stages is within their grasp.
