TORONTO, Football can be a cruel, beautiful, and utterly unpredictable game. For 94 minutes at a rain-slicked Toronto Stadium, the opening Group L fixture between Ghana and Panama looked destined to be remembered as a waterlogged tactical stalemate. Ghana’s historic lack of creativity had them pinned down, but a single moment of lethal transition transformed a dreary evening into absolute bedlam.
When the 20-year-old FC Nordsjælland midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi tapped home a low cross from substitute Brandon Thomas-Asante in the fifth minute of stoppage time, it didn’t just break Panamanian hearts—it ignited a massive post-goal melee and sent the Black Stars to the top of Group L alongside England. It was a classic “buzzer-beater” that handed legendary manager Carlos Queiroz a historic win in his joint-record fifth consecutive World Cup appearance.
First-half: Panama dictate, ghana freeze
The opening 45 minutes belonged entirely to Thomas Christiansen’s Los Canaleros. Executing a high-tempo pressing scheme that thrived in the slick conditions, Panama nearly opened the scoring just two minutes in. Michael Amir Murillo whipped a low, dangerous cross from the right wing to find Cecilio Waterman, whose first-time, 15-yard volley forced an acrobatic diving save out of Ghana’s starting shot-stopper, Lawrence Ati Zigi.
Ghana looked completely out of sorts. Missing talismanic midfielder Thomas Partey due to highly publicized visa issues into Canada, the Black Stars lacked any shred of forward impetus. In fact, Ghana failed to record a single shot in the first half—becoming the first team in the 2026 tournament to record that dubious statistic.
The physical toll of the half became evident just before the interval. Following a heavy collision in the box, Ati Zigi required extensive medical treatment. While he managed to survive the half, he would not return for the second, forcing backup keeper Benjamin Asare into the fiery crucible of a World Cup debut.
The Tactical shift: Queiroz pulls the strings
The second half brought a complete shift in momentum. Panama still looked dangerous on the break, with midfielder Cristian Martínez flashing a powerful shot into the side netting after a clever shimmy, but Ghana finally found their footing. The drought of shots was broken in the 48th minute when Jonas Adjetey met a cross with a firm header, though it was comfortably handled by Panama’s Orlando Mosquera.
Recognizing the need for dynamic width, Queiroz made a masterful double substitution in the 57th minute, bringing on Brandon Thomas-Asante and Abdul Fatawu for Kamaldeen Sulemana and Ernest Nuamah.
The tactical adjustment nearly paid dividends immediately. Thomas-Asante found space down the flank and zipped a dangerous ball across the face of the goal for veteran Jordan Ayew. Just as Ayew looked primed to slide it home, Panama’s Jiovany Ramos tracking back produced a breathtaking, goal-saving tackle to clear the danger.
90+5’: Stoppage-time Bedlam
As the clock ticked past the 90-minute mark, both sides looked physically spent, seemingly content to share a solitary point. Panama brought on veteran Aníbal Godoy to solidify the low block. Then, lightning struck.
Off a broken Panamanian set-piece, Ghana launched a breathtaking counter-attack. Moving the ball at dizzying speed out of their own half, the ball found Thomas-Asante on the left wing. The forward turned on the afterburners, cut into the 18-yard box, and delivered a sublime, low, angled pass across the six-yard box.
Arriving with perfect timing was Yirenkyi, who coolly redirected the ball into the back of the net to claim his first-ever international goal.
The stadium erupted. Overwhelmed by the raw emotion of a 95th-minute winner, players and staff clashed on the pitch in a chaotic melee, resulting in a late caution for Panama’s Carlos Harvey. Seconds later, the final whistle blew, solidifying a priceless 1-0 victory for the Black Stars.
