World Cup 2026: Kane double and second-half surge power England past Croatia in 4-2 classic

By Temi Kings

Arlington, Texas. In what will instantly be categorized as an all-time FIFA World Cup opening-round classic, Thomas Tuchel’s England launched their Group L campaign with a breathless, chaotic, and ultimately triumphant 4-2 victory over European heavyweights Croatia at a packed Dallas Stadium.

If any football purists wondered how England would shape up under Tuchel’s tactical regime, this six-goal thriller offered an emphatic answer: relentless on the front foot, but terrifyingly jittery at the back. Driven by a historic brace from skipper Harry Kane, a brilliant second-half strike from Jude Bellingham, and a late insurance goal from substitute Marcus Rashford, the Three Lions successfully banished the ghosts of their 2018 semi-final heartbreak to claim a vital three points.

First half: A chaotic, end-to-end firefight

England started with a clear blueprint to exploit the flanks, giving World Cup debutant Noni Madueke license to attack. In the 10th minute, that exact directness bore fruit. Madueke picked up a bouncing ball inside the box, reacting faster than Luka Modrić before the legendary Croatian captain clipped him while attempting a desperate clearance.

What followed was pure drama. Kane stepped up to take the penalty, only to see his initial low effort brilliantly turned away by Dominik Livaković. However, a VAR review revealed structural encroachment from Joško Gvardiol alongside Livaković advancing off his line. Given a rare second chance, Kane made no mistake in the 12th minute, blasting the retake into the exact same corner to give England an early 1-0 lead.

Croatia, refusing to fold, gradually asserted control in the midfield through Modrić and Petar Sučić. Their equalizer in the 36th minute arrived entirely against the run of play. Sučić cleverly rolled a pass back to the edge of the area for Martin Baturina, who unleashed an exquisite right-footed curling effort that beat Jordan Pickford’s acrobatic dive, clipping the goalkeeper’s palm on its way into the top corner.

The match refused to settle. Just six minutes later, England struck back from a dead-ball situation. Declan Rice swung a pinpoint corner toward the back post where Kane, completely unmarked after an intelligent late run, thudded a powerful header past Livaković. The goal carried historical weight, moving Kane level with Gary Lineker’s long-standing English record of 10 World Cup goals.

Yet, deep into first-half stoppage time (45+5′), Croatia stunned the English contingent once more. Mario Pašalić floated a dangerous ball over the top of a sleeping England defense. Ivan Perišić anticipated it perfectly, nodding it across the six-yard box for Petar Musa to instinctively volley home, sending the teams into the tunnel locked at 2-2.

Second half: Bellingham and the bench put on a clinic

Whatever tactical adjustments Tuchel made at halftime paid dividends within 120 seconds of the restart. In the 47th minute, Jude Bellingham took matters into his own hands. Receiving the ball on the right wing, the midfield talisman aggressively cut inside, driving past defenders before filtering a low, precise strike across Livaković into the far bottom corner.

“We played a very bad second half,” a frustrated Croatia manager Zlatko Dalić admitted post-match. “We reacted poorly to the deep balls and rotated terribly. Conceding that third goal so quickly after halftime made the mountain too high to climb.”

With a 3-2 lead established, the Three Lions suffocated Croatia with high-octane pressing. Only a magnificent string of interventions from Livaković kept the Vatreni within touching distance. The Croatian shot-stopper completed a spectacular triple-save midway through the half, somehow turning away a powerful goal-bound header from Nico O’Reilly and a fierce follow-up from Rice.

To secure the result, Tuchel turned to his bench, introducing Bukayo Saka and Marcus Rashford in the 71st minute. The substitution proved to be a masterstroke. Five minutes from time, Saka drove down the flank and picked out Rashford inside the area. The Manchester United forward exhibited sublime composure, shifting the ball onto his preferred foot and slotting it home to trigger pandemonium in the stands and guarantee a 4-2 victory.
