Vingegaard withdraws as British duo denied in Paris-Nice

Two-time Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard has withdrawn from Paris-Nice, while British riders Josh Tarling and Sam Watson fell short in a sprint finish on stage six.

Denmark’s Mads Pedersen claimed victory on the 209.8km route from Saint-Julien-en-Saint-Alban to Berre l’Etang, fending off Tarling in the final 100 meters, with Watson securing third place.

Vingegaard pulled out before Friday’s stage after injuring his wrist on Thursday, allowing his American teammate Matteo Jorgenson to strengthen his overall race lead.

In cold, wet, and windy conditions, Jorgenson’s Visma-Lease a Bike team launched an attack nearly 60km from the finish, shaking up the race and distancing five of the top 10 riders in the general classification, including Joao Almeida.

As a result, Jorgenson extended his lead in the general classification by another four seconds.

The penultimate stage on Saturday will see the peloton tackle a mountainous 109.5km route from Nice to Auron.
