Doha: The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) marked Olympic Day 2026 on Tuesday by hosting a boxing championship for junior, youth, and senior categories at the Oasis of Mall of Qatar.

Organized in collaboration with the Qatar Boxing and Wrestling Federation, the event underscored the QOC’s commitment to promoting Olympic values, encouraging physical activity, and fostering a healthy, active lifestyle across all segments of society.

The championship featured intense knockout bouts across multiple weight divisions:

  • Junior category: 46kg, 50kg, 57kg, and over-80kg
  • Youth category: 55kg, 56kg, 70kg, 80kg, and over-90kg
  • Senior category: 55kg, 60kg, 65kg, and 70kg

An interactive segment with sports and entertainment quizzes for children and young spectators added a festive and engaging atmosphere to the celebration. The event attracted QOC staff, federation officials, shoppers, and visitors who enjoyed the lively sporting environment at the mall.

Olympic Day, celebrated annually on June 23, commemorates the founding of the modern Olympic Movement by Baron Pierre de Coubertin on June 23, 1894. The day promotes sport for all and highlights the core Olympic values of Excellence, Friendship, and Respect.

Sheikh Fahad bin Khalid Al Thani, President of the Qatar Boxing and Wrestling Federation, stated that the event reflects the federation’s dedication to building a lasting sporting legacy in Qatar. He emphasized that boxing plays a vital role in developing physical fitness, discipline, mental resilience, and life skills among young athletes, while also serving as key preparation for upcoming major competitions, including the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games and the Doha 2030 Asian Games.

Abdulla Faraj Al Sultan, Event Director, highlighted that the QOC leverages Olympic Day celebrations to identify and nurture emerging talent, particularly in boxing, and to build a strong foundation for Qatar’s future success in continental and international competitions.

At the conclusion of the event, Sheikh Fahad bin Khalid Al Thani and Abdulaziz Ghanem, Head of the Sport Activities Section at the QOC, crowned the winners and honored sponsors, partners, and volunteers for their contributions to the successful celebration.
