Lusail International Circuit joins UNFCCC Sports for Climate Action Framework on World Environment Day

By Staff Reporter

Doha: Lusail International Circuit (LIC) has officially become a signatory of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Sports for Climate Action Framework, formalizing its long-term commitment to sustainability and climate action.

The announcement was made on World Environment Day, reinforcing Qatar’s national sustainability goals and LIC’s ongoing environmental efforts. The Sports for Climate Action Framework includes many of the world’s leading sports organizations and provides a structured global platform for climate responsibility in sport.

As a signatory, Lusail International Circuit commits to five core principles: promoting environmental responsibility, reducing climate impact, educating for climate action, encouraging sustainable consumption, and using its communications platforms to drive change.

This milestone builds on significant progress already achieved by the circuit. In 2025, LIC earned the FIA’s highest environmental recognition — the Three Star Environmental Accreditation — in recognition of its wide-ranging sustainability initiatives, including renewable energy use, electric mobility solutions, advanced waste management, accessibility, wellbeing, and community engagement programs.

Looking ahead, LIC is developing a comprehensive multi-year climate transition plan that includes:

  • Reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030
  • Achieving net zero emissions by 2040
  • Defining emissions boundaries, measuring impact, and implementing reduction strategies across operations, events, and supply chains

Abdulaziz Ali Al Mohannadi, Chief Executive Officer of Lusail International Circuit, said:

“Joining the UNFCCC Sports for Climate Action Framework is an important step for Lusail International Circuit and reflects the direction we have been working towards. Our focus has been on building a strong foundation — from achieving the FIA Three Star Environmental Accreditation to introducing practical initiatives across our events and operations. This framework gives us a clear structure to build on that progress and accelerate it.”

He added:

“We recognise the role sport can play in bringing people together and influencing positive change, and we are committed to using our platform to contribute to a more sustainable future, supporting Qatar National Vision 2030.”

As part of its commitment, LIC will measure and publicly report its greenhouse gas emissions annually, implement targeted reduction initiatives, and actively engage fans, partners, and stakeholders in broader climate action efforts.

The move marks a new phase in Lusail International Circuit’s sustainability journey — shifting from individual initiatives to a more structured, measurable, and ambitious long-term climate strategy.
