West Ham 0-1 Arsenal: Late drama, VAR tension and defensive resolve send Gunners to crucial victory

Arsenal secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over West Ham United in a tense London derby defined by defensive discipline, missed opportunities, and late VAR drama at the London Stadium.

In a match where chances were limited and every moment carried significance, Arsenal showed composure under pressure to grind out another massive result in their push at the top end of the table. West Ham, however, made life extremely difficult throughout the contest, remaining compact defensively and dangerous on transitions.

The first half was a tactical battle, with Arsenal dominating possession but struggling to break through West Ham’s organized defensive structure. The visitors controlled the tempo and circulated the ball well in midfield, yet clear-cut opportunities remained rare as both sides approached the break deadlocked.

Arsenal eventually found the decisive breakthrough in the second half through Leandro Trossard, whose finish gave the visitors the lead in a game that increasingly looked destined to be decided by a single moment. The goal immediately shifted the intensity of the contest, forcing West Ham to push forward more aggressively in search of an equaliser.

The hosts nearly found that response when Matheus Fernandes was presented with a huge opportunity in the second half. With space opening up inside the box, Fernandes looked set to level the match, but he failed to take advantage of the chance, fumbling the opportunity at a crucial moment to the frustration of the home crowd.

As the game entered stoppage time, the drama intensified further. West Ham thought they had rescued a dramatic equaliser when Callum Wilson found the net again deep into the 90+2 minute. Celebrations erupted briefly, but VAR intervened and ruled the goal out, preserving Arsenal’s narrow advantage and sparking frustration among the home supporters.

The closing moments were frantic, with West Ham throwing bodies forward while Arsenal defended desperately to protect their lead. Ultimately, Mikel Arteta’s side held firm to secure an important three points in a contest that demanded patience, resilience, and concentration until the final whistle.

For Arsenal, it was another statement victory built on discipline and defensive organization which takes them closer to a victory of twenty- two years coming. For West Ham, however, it was a painful defeat defined by missed chances and fine margins that ultimately went against them.
